Novak Djokovic vs. Roger Federer - Wimbledon Men's Final Preview

Of their 34 encounters, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer will battle only for the second time on grass court. The men’s Wimbledon final holds two great champions and even better tennis.

Novak Djokovic is looking to reclaim his world number one ranking and his second Wimbledon trophy. He has played some long and hard matches coming into the final, which could leave him well prepared to outlast anything Federer could throw at him.

He overcame Grigor Dimitrov in a roller coaster four set match 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(2), 7-6(7). He’s been primed to go the distance, which could be the edge for him on Sunday.

Roger Federer is aiming at the chance to be the first man to win eight Wimbledon titles. Which sounds like a lot looking back at his 2013 campaign when he was overcoming a back injury, but Federer has had convincing wins all through the tournament. He has dropped only one set proceeding into the final.

His last match was a straight set win over young Canadian, Milos Raonic, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. It’s obvious that Wimbledon, Centre Court is Federer’s comfort zone.

The two champions shared very similar sentiments towards their match:

“We always play good matches against each other,” said Federer. “We’ve played each other a lot the past six months, and it’s gone back and forth a bit. Novak is a great champion; he’s used to these occasions. He’s won here before and knows how to get it done. I hope it’s going to be a good match.”

“Well, we know each other’s games,” said Djokovic.  “We played many matches on different occasions. As you said, only once on grass court, but we played so many times in semifinals and finals of Grand Slams, different surfaces, big matches over the years. They were very exciting.”

Federer does lead their head-to-head 18-16, but both players have a lot of motivation for winning, each with their own edge to add to the game. It’s no doubt going to be edge of your seat type of tennis.

Match Prediction: Roger Federer in five sets.
